What's Your Story?

What story does your life tell?

Think of how vast your own story could be. Everything you have ever done, or thought about, or have hoped to do, all go in to making you. Then look around, and realize the same holds true for everyone around you. The amount of stuff in the lives of or on the minds of the people interacting in the Porch Café on any given Tuesday would be enough to break the entire publishing industry.

The Gospels, or the story of Jesus in the New Testament, end with these words:

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25)

If that sounds like a gross exaggeration for a man who spent only 33 years on earth, consider this: Jesus is still at work. He is still working on and working in people, including myself and yourself and the self of that guy over there that you’re afraid to talk to. That guy’s story alone could fill volumes, both funny and heartbreaking, with foreshadowing and shocking twists and great triumphs that may or may not have been written yet.

But what good is a story if it is not told?

At The Porch, we want to be a community that both makes and shares stories. A forum of honesty, and care, and celebration. Jesus is still at work, though it is usually in spite of, not because of, anything we do. The hurting are getting help, the lonely are becoming known, and the walking dead are finding true life. There are even people physically alive and in our midst today who would otherwise be dead and buried. (Read that sentence again; it is literally true.) More importantly, there are people who will live forever, and for whom the grave no longer holds any power.

What’s your story? We want to know. Take five minutes to write it down, or take two minutes after The Porch and we’ll grab a camera to film it. We’ll share the stories here to celebrate what is being done.
