What's The Point of Easter?

You might think Easter is the time to pop in Church—maybe for the first time this year. Check that box. Or maybe you think Easter is a time to refresh and restart. It’s all about forgiveness, right?

You’re not wrong to think Easter is about forgiveness…but it’s so much more than just one single weekend to reset—and that is GREAT news. Think about where we were a year ago. Things in this world got pretty crazy…and they still are. But here’s the good news: The story we celebrate on Easter, and the forgiveness the hero of the story offers, is available all year long.

What do we celebrate on Easter?

All of us can agree this world is broken…COVID, the bushfires in Australia, Kobe Bryant’s passing? Bad stuff happens all the time. And we hate it. But that isn’t how God originally designed this world.

The perfect world God created became imperfect in Genesis 3 when sin entered it. Sin is anything we think, say, or do that doesn’t honor God. Romans 3:23 says that all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, BUT God values the lost being restored back to him. Bad behavior doesn't stop his love. And good behavior doesn't earn his love.

In Genesis 3:15, God promised that Jesus would come and triumph over all evil! And that day came. God shows just how much he loves us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). But the story didn’t stop there, because Jesus didn’t stay dead! 3 days later he rose from the grave, and that is what we celebrate on Easter…but why?

Romans 10:9 tells us that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we’ll be saved! He says in Luke 19:10, "I came to seek and save the lost." Why did Jesus come? Well that's why! He came to seek after people just like us!

In Revelation 3:20 it says he stands at the door of every human’s heart and knocks, wanting to come into their life and have a relationship with them. He's not distant or far off. He's a God who's seeking and knocking at the door of your life, and if you've never trusted or accepted that free gift, the God who's there isn’t angry with you…he's in love with you and wants a relationship with you, and he proved it by dying in your place. Today is your day to trust Him if you never have before!

Even the fact that you're here today reading this blog (and you might've just kind of stumbled upon it) is reflective of the fact that God hasn’t forgotten you. He's seeking you. If you're reading this at a later time, that's the same thing going on, because our God loves giving good things to his children, but he loves…do not miss it… giving the best thing: new life!

Do you know what's crazy? It's like the more you grow as a Christian, the more you develop, the more you get to know Jesus, the more you walk with him, and the more you spend time with him and get to know him and spend time with his Word and walk with his people, something in your heart begins to shift. The things you desire and the things you ask for begin to change. This Easter, we have a chance to be those who share the heart of the Father to a world full of lost men and women.
