Our world not only tolerates "self-centered" living, our world encourages it. This type of living hardens the heart behind what Jesus came to teach and model for us. Our lives and ultimately all of life are created by and for Him. All glory and honor is due to the only one worthy of it Jesus. We, just like John the Baptist, are to embrace, He must increase, but we must decrease.
